Hiking to the crater of Mount Vesuvius is a short but dramatic excursion from Naples—a 30-minute walk from the car park at 1,000 metres to the 1,281-metre summit, where you peer into the steaming crater and across the Bay of Naples.
Vesuvius famously erupted in 79 AD, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum. The last eruption was in 1944. It remains Europe's most dangerous volcano.
