Gellért Hill rises 235 metres above the Danube on the Buda side, topped by the Liberty Statue and the Citadella fortress. The panoramic views from the hilltop are Budapest's most expansive.
Named after Bishop Gellért, who was rolled down the hill in a barrel by pagan Hungarians in 1046. The Liberty Statue was erected in 1947 to commemorate liberation from Nazi occupation.
