Dubrovnik City Walls

Overview

Dubrovnik's City Walls stretch 1,940 metres around the entire Old Town, rising up to 25 metres high and 6 metres thick. Walking the full circuit is the defining Dubrovnik experience—a continuous panorama of terracotta rooftops, the Adriatic, and the island of Lokrum.

Highlights

• Full circuit: The 2 km walk takes 1–2 hours with stops for photos and two fortress towers.
• Minčeta Tower: The highest point on the walls, with 360° views.
• Adriatic views: The seaward side drops sheer to the turquoise water.

History

The walls were built between the 13th and 17th centuries, reinforced against Ottoman threats. They withstood a 15-month siege in 1991–92 during the Croatian War of Independence.

Visitor Tips

• Early morning: Enter at 08:00 (Pile Gate) to beat the crowds and cruise-ship groups.
• Entry: ~€35; one-way circuit only (counterclockwise).
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
