Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage sea fortress spread across six interconnected islands, 15 minutes by ferry from Helsinki's Market Square. Built by Sweden in 1748, it combines military history with coastal scenery, museums, and a living community of 800 residents.
Built by Sweden as 'Sveaborg' to defend against Russian expansion, the fortress was surrendered to Russia in 1808 and became Finnish in 1918. It housed a prison camp during the Civil War.
