Helsinki Cathedral is the white neoclassical landmark dominating Senate Square, its green dome and Corinthian columns defining the city's silhouette. Built in 1852 as a tribute to Tsar Nicholas I, its stark white interior is Lutheran simplicity at its purest.
Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel as part of his neoclassical Senate Square ensemble (1830–1852). Originally called St. Nicholas's Church after Tsar Nicholas I.
