Overview
The Esplanadi is Helsinki's most elegant boulevard—a linden-tree-lined park flanked by upscale shops, cafés, and the Swedish Theatre. In summer, the park fills with musicians, food stalls, and sunbathing Helsinkians.
Highlights
- Café Kappeli: The 1867 glass pavilion at the eastern end, Helsinki's most storied café.
- Havis Amanda fountain: The 1908 bronze mermaid fountain, a Helsinki symbol.
- Shopping: Marimekko, Aarikka, and Finnish design flagships line the south side.
History
Laid out in 1812 as part of Engel's city plan, the Esplanadi was modelled on European boulevard parks.
