The Turia Gardens (Jardín del Turia) fill the 9 km bed of the diverted Turia River with fountains, sports facilities, playgrounds, and botanical gardens. It's Valencia's green spine, connecting the Bioparc to the City of Arts and Sciences.
After the catastrophic 1957 flood, the Turia was diverted south. Plans to build a motorway in the riverbed were blocked by citizen protests, and the park was created instead (1986).
