Built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, Munich's Olympiapark remains a vibrant recreational and events complex. Its revolutionary tent-like acrylic-glass roof by Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch defined a new era of architectural lightness and optimism.
Designed to project a new, progressive Germany, the park's transparent structures were a deliberate contrast to the monumental 1936 Berlin Olympics. The grounds are also a memorial to the 1972 Munich massacre.
