Overview
Odeonsplatz is Munich's most Italianate square, framed by the Theatinerkirche, the Feldherrnhalle (a copy of Florence's Loggia dei Lanzi), and the entrance to the Hofgarten. It's both a grand civic stage and a key waypoint connecting the Residenz to Schwabing.
Highlights
- Feldherrnhalle: The triple-arched loggia (1844) honouring Bavarian military heroes, modelled on the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.
- Theatinerkirche: The mustard-yellow Baroque church dominates the west side.
- Ludwigstraße vista: Looking north, the boulevard stretches to the Siegestor triumphal arch.
History
The Feldherrnhalle is also linked to darker history—it was the site of the failed 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, and the Nazis later used it as a shrine. A small memorial alley bypasses the loggia.
