Overview
Munich's New Town Hall is a neo-Gothic masterpiece stretching 100 metres along the north side of Marienplatz. Built between 1867 and 1909 by Georg von Hauberrisser, it houses the city council chambers and a tower with a viewing platform at 85 metres.
Highlights
- Glockenspiel: 43 bells and 32 figures perform two stories—a 1568 jousting tournament and the Schäfflertanz (coopers' dance) from the plague year of 1517.
- Tower lift: An elevator takes visitors to the 85 m platform for panoramic views of the Alps on clear days.
- Inner courtyard: Quiet Gothic arcades with seasonal café tables, hidden from the busy square.
History
The original Old Town Hall proved too small for Munich's growing administration. Architect Hauberrisser's winning design deliberately quoted Flemish Gothic cloth halls, giving Munich a grand civic stage.
