The renaturalised Isar riverbanks south of the city centre are Munich's favourite outdoor living room. Since a €35-million restoration (2000–2011) removed concrete embankments and reintroduced natural gravel beaches, the Isar has become a summer destination for swimming, barbecuing, and sunset beers.
Munich was founded at an Isar crossing point in 1158. For centuries the river powered mills and floated goods. The 21st-century renaturalisation reversed industrial-era damage and reconnected the city with its river.
