Kahlenberg

Overview

Kahlenberg is a 484-metre hill in the Vienna Woods offering sweeping views over the city, the Danube, and the vineyards of the wine villages below. It's the starting point for hikes and the climax of Vienna's Heurigen wine culture.

History

Kahlenberg is where the combined Austrian and Polish armies, led by King Jan III Sobieski, launched the decisive charge that broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna on 12 September 1683. A chapel and plaque commemorate the event.

Visitor Tips

• Bus 38A: From U4 Heiligenstadt, the bus takes 25 minutes to the summit.
• Heurigen walk: Walk downhill to Grinzing (45 min) for wine and a return tram.
• Duration: 1–2 hours.
