Overview
Topkapi Palace was the primary residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, a sprawling complex of courtyards, gardens, and pavilions on a promontory overlooking the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
Highlights
- The Harem: Over 300 rooms of ornate tiled chambers where the sultan's family and concubines lived — a separate ticket is required.
- Imperial Treasury: Houses the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, the Topkapi Dagger, and other priceless jewels.
- Sacred Relics: The Prophet Muhammad's cloak, sword, and other holy relics in a specially guarded chamber.
History
Built by Sultan Mehmed II after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, expanded by successive sultans until the 19th century when the court moved to Dolmabahce. Converted to a museum in 1924 by Ataturk.
Visitor Tips
- Buy Harem Ticket Separately: The Harem is the highlight but requires its own ticket — buy both at the entrance.
- Go Early: Arrive at opening to beat tour groups, especially for the Harem and Treasury.
