Overview
Rumeli Hisarı (Rumeli Fortress) is a massive 15th-century fortress built at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus by Sultan Mehmed II, specifically to control the strait and strangle Constantinople's supply lines before the final siege.

History
Mehmed II built the fortress in 1452, one year before the fall of Constantinople. It worked in tandem with Anadolu Hisarı across the strait to form a deadly chokepoint. After the conquest, it served as a customs checkpoint and later a prison.
