Overview
The Princes' Islands (Adalar) are a car-free archipelago of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, a popular escape from the city. Grand Victorian-era wooden mansions, pine forests, and horse-drawn carriages create a timeless atmosphere.
Highlights
- Büyükada: The largest island with grand Ottoman mansions, hilltop monasteries, and a circumnavigation trail.
- Historic Mansions: Elaborate wooden yalı mansions from the 19th century line the waterfront and hillsides.
- Car-Free Peace: No cars are allowed — transport is by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle, or electric buggy.
History
Used as a place of exile during Byzantine and Ottoman times, the islands became a fashionable summer resort for Istanbul's Greek, Jewish, and Armenian communities in the 19th century. Leon Trotsky lived on Büyükada from 1929 to 1933.
Visitor Tips
- Ferry from Kadıköy or Kabataş: The 90-minute ferry ride is scenic and inexpensive.
