Overview
Kız Kulesi (Maiden's Tower) is an iconic small tower on a tiny islet at the entrance to the Bosphorus, straddling the border between the European and Asian sides. Recently restored, it has become one of Istanbul's most romantic viewpoints.
Highlights
- 360° Bosphorus Views: The observation deck offers unique views of both continents and the city skyline.
- Legend: Turkish legend says a sultan imprisoned his daughter here after a prophecy she would die of a snakebite — she died anyway from a snake hidden in a fruit basket.
- Boat Ride: The short ferry ride from Üsküdar or Salacak is part of the experience.
History
The site has been used since the 5th century BC. The current structure dates from 1725 and has served as a lighthouse, quarantine station, customs post, and today a museum and restaurant.
