Overview
The Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, a labyrinthine network of 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops that has been the commercial heart of Istanbul since 1461.
Highlights
- Scale: Over 30,000 square meters of covered shopping across 61 streets — it's easy to spend hours exploring.
- Artisan Crafts: Carpets, ceramics, metalwork, leather, jewelry, and hand-painted tiles from across Turkey.
- Historic Bedestens: The two original stone-vaulted halls (bedestens) date from the 15th century and house the most valuable goods.
History
The first structures were built by Sultan Mehmed II in 1461, shortly after the conquest. The bazaar grew organically over centuries, surviving earthquakes, fires, and even a major fire in 1954 that destroyed nearly half the market.
Visitor Tips
- Bargain: Prices are inflated for tourists — negotiate firmly and expect to pay 40–60% of the asking price.
- Avoid Mondays: Many shops close on Sundays; some close Mondays too.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
