Overview
The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is one of Islam's holiest sites outside Mecca and Medina, built over the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who died during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in 674 AD.

History
Mehmed II built the first mosque here in 1458, five years after conquering Constantinople. The tomb was reportedly discovered during the siege. The current mosque dates from 1800 after the original was damaged.

- Respect: This is an active pilgrimage site — dress conservatively and behave respectfully.
- Combine with Pierre Loti: Walk up through the cemetery to Pierre Loti Hill for spectacular views.
