The Chora Church (Kariye Camii) contains the finest surviving examples of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, rivaling those of Ravenna. Now a functioning mosque, its 14th-century artwork depicts scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Originally a 4th-century church, the current structure dates from the 11th century. Theodore Metochites commissioned the magnificent mosaics and frescoes in 1315–1321. Converted to a mosque in 1511, a museum in 1945, and back to a mosque in 2020.
