Overview
The Campanile di San Marco is the 98.6-meter bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica and the tallest structure in Venice. Its viewing platform offers unparalleled panoramic views over the rooftops, lagoon, and — on clear days — the Dolomites.
Highlights
- 360° Panorama: Views span from the Lido to the mainland, the islands of Murano and Burano, and the winding Grand Canal.
- The Five Bells: Each of the five historic bells had a different civic function, from marking executions to calling senators.
- Elevator Access: A lift takes visitors to the top, making it easily accessible.
History
The original tower was built in the 9th century. It collapsed entirely on July 14, 1902 (miraculously killing only a cat). The city rebuilt it 'dov'era e com'era' (where it was, as it was) by 1912.
