Overview
San Polo is Venice's smallest but most historically dense sestiere, the commercial heart of the city for centuries. Its winding calli lead from the Rialto Market through artisan workshops to the great churches of the Frari and San Rocco.
Highlights
- Campo San Polo: The second largest square in Venice, used for outdoor cinema in summer.
- Artisan Workshops: Mask-makers, printmakers, and bookbinders maintain centuries-old crafts.
- Hidden Churches: Tiny gems like San Giacomo di Rialto, reputedly Venice's oldest church, founded in 421 AD.
History
San Polo was settled in the 9th century and became Venice's commercial core due to its position near the Rialto Bridge. Merchants from across Europe traded goods in its fondaci (warehouses).
Visitor Tips
- Get Lost on Purpose: The best way to explore San Polo is to wander without a map.
