Overview
Punta della Dogana is a triangular former customs warehouse at the very tip of Dorsoduro, restored by architect Tadao Ando into a world-class contemporary art museum for the Pinault Collection.
Highlights
- Tadao Ando's Architecture: The Japanese architect's minimalist concrete interventions within the raw brick shell create a powerful dialogue between old and new.
- Rotating Exhibitions: Major installations from the François Pinault collection, often using the vast industrial spaces for immersive works.
- Location: The tip of the peninsula offers views across to San Marco, San Giorgio Maggiore, and the Giudecca.
History
The customs house was built in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1682. After decades of neglect, François Pinault won the restoration project in 2007. The museum opened in 2009.
