Overview
Madonna dell'Orto is a beautiful Gothic church in northern Cannaregio, the parish church of Tintoretto, who lived nearby and is buried here. It contains several of his most powerful paintings.
Highlights
- Tintoretto's Last Judgment: A towering, turbulent masterwork filling the apse wall.
- The Presentation of the Virgin: Tintoretto's dramatic interpretation of the young Mary climbing the temple steps.
- Tintoretto's Tomb: The artist's simple grave slab is in the chapel to the right of the altar.
History
Founded in the 14th century, the church gets its name from a miraculous statue of the Madonna found in a nearby garden (orto). Tintoretto painted for the church at reduced rates as his devotional contribution.
