Overview
Dorsoduro is Venice's artsy sestiere (district), home to the Accademia, Guggenheim, and Punta della Dogana galleries, plus the lively university quarter and the waterfront Zattere promenade.
Highlights
- Zattere Promenade: A sun-drenched waterfront walkway facing the island of Giudecca, perfect for afternoon gelato.
- Campo Santa Margherita: The social heart of student Venice, lined with bars and cafés buzzing well into the night.
- Art Triangle: Walk between the Accademia, Guggenheim, and Punta della Dogana — all within 15 minutes of each other.
History
Dorsoduro means 'hard backbone,' referring to the firm clay soil that makes it one of Venice's most stable areas. It has been an artistic and intellectual quarter since the founding of the Accademia in 1750.
Visitor Tips
- Sunset on Zattere: The south-facing promenade catches golden evening light — bring a spritz.
- Less Crowded: Dorsoduro sees far fewer tourists than San Marco, especially west of the Accademia.
- Duration: 2–3 hours wandering.
