Overview
Cannaregio is Venice's most populous sestiere, stretching from the train station to the northern lagoon. It blends authentic Venetian daily life with the historic Jewish Ghetto and quiet canal-side walks far from the crowds.
Highlights
- Fondamenta della Misericordia: A lively strip of bars and restaurants along a wide canal, popular with locals.
- Madonna dell'Orto: Tintoretto's parish church, containing several of his finest works.
- Northern Lagoon Views: The Fondamente Nove waterfront offers sweeping views toward Murano and the cemetery island of San Michele.
History
The name may derive from 'canal regio' (royal canal) or from the cane reeds (canne) that once grew here. It has been Venice's most residential sestiere since the 16th century, when the Jewish Ghetto was established.
