Varvakios Agora (Central Market) is Athens' bustling covered food market since 1886 — a sensory explosion of fresh fish, hanging carcasses, mountains of olives, wheels of cheese, and barrels of spices.
Built in 1886 and named after benefactor Ioannis Varvakis, the market replaced open-air vendors who had sold in the area since Ottoman times. It remains Athens' primary wholesale and retail food market.
