The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and sits in the exact spot of a 4th-century BC Greek stadium.
Originally built around 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games, it was rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus in 144 AD. Abandoned and buried for centuries, it was excavated and restored for the 1896 Olympics by Greek benefactor Georgios Averoff.
