Monastiraki is one of Athens' most vibrant neighborhoods, a swirl of ancient ruins, flea market stalls, street musicians, and rooftop bars centered around its lively square with its iconic mosque and Metro station.
The neighborhood takes its name from a small monastery (monastiraki) that once stood in the square. The area has been a commercial hub since Ottoman times, centered around the Tzistarakis Mosque (now a ceramics museum).
