Overview
Lycabettus Hill is the highest point in central Athens at 277 meters, a pine-covered limestone peak offering the most spectacular 360-degree panorama in the city — from the Acropolis to the Saronic Gulf islands.
Highlights
- 360° Panorama: Views encompass the Acropolis, the city, Piraeus port, and on clear days the islands of Aegina and the Peloponnese.
- Chapel of St. George: A whitewashed chapel crowning the summit.
- Open-Air Theatre: The Lycabettus Theatre hosts concerts in summer with the city lights as a backdrop.
History
According to myth, Athena dropped the hill when a crow brought her bad news while she was carrying it to fortify the Acropolis. The funicular railway was built in 1965.
Visitor Tips
- Funicular or Hike: The funicular (€5 each way) is convenient; the 30-minute uphill walk through pine forest is rewarding.

- Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
