Overview
Kerameikos is Athens' ancient cemetery and potter's quarter, a peaceful archaeological site with the city's oldest tombs, the Sacred Way to Eleusis, and replicas of remarkable funerary monuments.
Highlights
- Street of Tombs: An evocative row of elaborate marble grave monuments lining the ancient road.
- Sacred Way: The starting point of the processional road to Eleusis used in the Mysteries.
- Oberlaender Museum: A small on-site museum with original funeral sculptures and pottery.
History
Kerameikos was Athens' main burial ground from the 12th century BC to Roman times. The name comes from the potters (kerameis) who worked with the local clay — giving us the word 'ceramic.'
