Overview
Cape Sounion is a dramatic clifftop promontory 70 km south of Athens, crowned by the Temple of Poseidon — its 15 remaining Doric columns perched 65 meters above the Aegean Sea, creating one of Greece's most iconic sunset vistas.
Highlights
- Temple of Poseidon: Fifteen of the original 42 marble columns still stand against the sea and sky.
- Sunset: Watching the sun sink into the Aegean from the temple is one of Greece's great experiences.
- Byron's Graffiti: Lord Byron carved his name into a pillar during his 1810 visit.
History
The current temple was built around 440 BC, roughly contemporary with the Parthenon. Ancient Athenian sailors could see the columns from far out at sea and knew they were home.
