Overview
Tram 28 is Lisbon's most famous public transport line — a vintage yellow remodelado streetcar that rattles through the city's narrowest streets, connecting Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique via Alfama, Graça, Chiado, and Estrela.
Highlights
- Alfama stretch: The tram squeezes through alleyways so narrow that balconies almost touch overhead.
- Graça viewpoints: The route passes Miradouro da Graça and other hilltop terraces.
- Authentic experience: Unlike tourist trams, this is a working public transport line used daily by Lisboetas.
History
Lisbon's tram system dates to 1873 (horse-drawn) and was electrified in 1901. The remodelado cars running on line 28 date from the 1930s, rebuilt with modern braking and electrical systems.
Visitor Tips
- Ride early or late: Before 09:00 or after 17:00 to avoid standing-room-only crowds.
- Beware pickpockets: The crowded tram is a known hotspot — keep valuables secure.
- Duration: 30–40 minutes one way.
