Overview
The Arco da Rua Augusta is a triumphal arch at the northern edge of Praça do Comércio, celebrating Lisbon's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. A lift and staircase lead to a rooftop viewing platform with views over the Baixa.
Highlights
- Rooftop terrace: Panoramic views down Rua Augusta to the Rossio, across the square, and over the river.
- Allegorical sculptures: Figures representing Glory, Genius, and Valour crown the arch.
- Mosaic pavement: The Baixa's distinctive black-and-white wave-pattern cobblestones stretch from the base of the arch.
History
Planned by the Marquis of Pombal as part of the Baixa reconstruction, the arch was only completed in 1873 — over a century after the earthquake. The viewing platform opened to the public in 2013.
