Parque das Nações

Overview

Parque das Nações is a modern urban district on the eastern riverfront, built for the 1998 World Exposition. Today it houses the Lisbon Oceanarium, a cable car, contemporary architecture, and waterfront promenades.

Highlights

• Oceanarium: Europe's largest indoor aquarium (see separate entry).
• Telecabine: An aerial gondola running 1.2 km along the waterfront.
• Vasco da Gama Bridge: At 17.2 km, Europe's longest bridge, visible from the park.

History

Transformed from a derelict industrial zone for Expo 98, whose theme was "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future." Architecture by Santiago Calatrava (Gare do Oriente), Álvaro Siza, and Peter Chermayeff (Oceanarium).

Visitor Tips

• Half-day: Combine the Oceanarium, cable car, and waterfront walk.
• Metro access: Oriente station on the Red Line connects directly.
• Duration: 2–4 hours.
