Overview
Parque Florestal de Monsanto is Lisbon's "green lung" — a 900-hectare hilltop forest of umbrella pines, cork oaks, and eucalyptus with walking trails, picnic areas, and panoramic viewpoints across the Tagus.
Highlights
- Panorâmico de Monsanto: An abandoned 1960s restaurant with rooftop views (exterior only).
- Walking trails: Marked paths ranging from easy loops to longer hikes.
- Miradouro de Monsanto: A formal viewpoint with benches overlooking the 25 de Abril Bridge.
History
Planted by Salazar's regime in the 1930s–40s to reforest a barren hillside, using primarily Atlantic and Mediterranean tree species. Now managed as a public natural park.
Visitor Tips
- Best by car or bike: The park is large and spread out; public transport access is limited.
- Running routes: Popular with local runners — well-maintained trails and shade.
- Duration: 1.5–3 hours.
