Chiado is Lisbon's most elegant shopping and cultural district, perched between the Baixa and Bairro Alto. Its tree-lined streets are lined with historic bookshops, Art Nouveau cafés, theatres, and the city's finest retail.
Chiado was Lisbon's literary and intellectual centre in the 19th and early 20th centuries — the haunt of poet Fernando Pessoa. A devastating fire in 1988 destroyed part of the district; Álvaro Siza Vieira led the sensitive reconstruction.
