Overview
The world's largest sculpture park dedicated to a single artist, featuring over 200 bronze and granite sculptures by Gustav Vigeland depicting the human life cycle in all its raw, unfiltered emotional intensity.
Highlights
- The Monolith: A 14-metre-high granite column carved from a single block, featuring 121 intertwined human figures writhing upward.
- Angry Boy: The famously furious bronze toddler (Sinnataggen), one of Norway's most photographed sculptures.
- The Wheel of Life: A ring of intertwined figures symbolising eternity, placed at the highest point of the park.
History
Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943) spent 20 years creating these sculptures under an agreement with the city of Oslo. In exchange for a studio and living expenses, he gave all his works to the city. The park arrangement was completed by 1949.
