Royal Palace

Overview

The Royal Palace sits at the western end of Karl Johans gate, surrounded by 22 hectares of parkland. It remains the official residence of the Norwegian Royal Family.

Highlights

• State Rooms: Summer tours reveal the Banquet Hall, Council Chamber, and Bird Room.
• Changing of the Guard: Daily ceremony at 13:30.

History

Built 1824–1849 for King Charles III John in neoclassical style by Hans Linstow. It was the first major public building in the new Norwegian capital.

Visitor Tips

• Summer Only: Interior tours late June to mid-August only.
• The Park: Always open and free.
• Duration: 45–60 minutes.
