Akershus Fortress

Overview

A medieval castle and fortress perched on a rocky headland overlooking Oslo Harbour, built around 1299. It has served as royal residence, military stronghold, and prison over seven centuries.

History

Built by King Haakon V around 1299 to defend Oslo. Never conquered by force. During WWII, occupying German forces used it as a prison for resistance fighters.

• Free Grounds: Fortress grounds are free. Castle interior requires a ticket.
