Overview
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) is Amsterdam's oldest building, dating from around 1213. Located in the Red Light District, it now serves as both a church and a contemporary art exhibition space.
Highlights
- Medieval Ceiling: One of the largest medieval wooden vaulted ceilings in Europe.
- Stained Glass Windows: Three restored 16th-century windows depicting the life of the Virgin Mary.
- Floor Tombstones: Over 2,500 graves beneath the floor, including Rembrandt's wife Saskia.
History
Originally a small wooden chapel, it was expanded into a Gothic basilica over the 14th and 15th centuries. It was stripped of Catholic imagery during the Reformation in 1578.
