Overview
The Begijnhof is a tranquil medieval courtyard hidden behind a doorway off the Spui. Founded in 1346 as a residence for the Beguines (Catholic lay sisters), it contains Amsterdam's oldest surviving house.
Highlights
- Het Houten Huys: Amsterdam's oldest house, dating from around 1528, with a wooden façade.
- Hidden Chapel: A secret Catholic chapel from 1671, installed when Catholic worship was banned.
- Garden Courtyard: A secluded green space surrounded by historic gabled houses.
History
The Beguines lived here from 1346 until the last member died in 1971. The complex survived the Protestant Reformation by discreetly continuing Catholic worship.
