Overview
The Reichstag is the seat of the German Bundestag and one of Berlin's most visited buildings, celebrated for Norman Foster's 1999 glass dome that symbolizes democratic transparency. Free advance registration lets visitors ascend for panoramic views.
Highlights
- Glass Dome: A spiralling ramp inside the dome offers 360° views and a mirrored cone that channels daylight into the parliamentary chamber below.
- Rooftop Terrace: Open-air views across Tiergarten and the government quarter.
- Historical Graffiti: Preserved Cyrillic inscriptions left by Soviet soldiers in 1945 are visible on interior walls.
History
Completed in 1894 by Paul Wallot, the building survived the notorious 1933 fire, wartime bombing, and decades of Cold War neglect. Foster's reconstruction (1995–1999) turned it into a model of sustainable architecture with a biofuel plant and solar panels.
Visitor Tips
- Book ahead: Free dome visits must be reserved online at least 2–3 days in advance.
