Overview
Museum Island is a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of five museums on the northern tip of a Spree island in central Berlin. Spanning 6,000 years of human history, it ranks among the world's most important museum complexes.
Highlights
- Pergamon Museum: Monumental reconstructions of the Ishtar Gate, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Mshatta Facade.
- Neues Museum: Home to the bust of Nefertiti and the prehistoric Gold Hat of Berlin.
- James Simon Gallery: David Chipperfield's 2019 entrance building uniting all five museums.
History
The island's museum tradition began in 1830 with the Altes Museum. Over the following century, four more museums were added. Heavily damaged in WWII, the complex was gradually restored, with major reconstruction completed in the 2000s–2020s.
