Overview
Gendarmenmarkt is widely considered Berlin's most beautiful public square, flanked by the twin French and German Cathedrals and the neoclassical Konzerthaus.
Highlights
- Konzerthaus Berlin: Karl Friedrich Schinkel's neoclassical masterpiece (1821), home to the Konzerthausorchester.
- French Cathedral: Houses the Huguenot Museum; the tower platform offers panoramic views.
- Christmas Market: One of Berlin's most atmospheric Advent markets (late November–December).
History
Laid out in 1688 as part of the Friedrichstadt expansion, the square was named after the Gens d'Armes cavalry regiment garrisoned here. The twin dome towers were added by Carl von Gontard in 1785.
