Overview
Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Today a replica guardhouse and open-air exhibition mark the spot on Friedrichstraße.
Highlights
- Guardhouse replica: A reconstructed Allied checkpoint cabin with sandbag barriers and the famous "You are leaving the American sector" sign.
- Open-air exhibition: Panels documenting escape attempts, the Wall's construction, and Cold War diplomacy.
- Tank standoff site: In October 1961, American and Soviet tanks faced each other here in the Cold War's tensest moment.
History
Established in August 1961, Checkpoint Charlie ("C" in NATO phonetic alphabet) served as the regulated crossing for foreigners, diplomats, and Allied military between the American and Soviet sectors until 1990.
Visitor Tips
- Skip the costumed soldiers: People in uniform at the checkpoint are paid photo-ops, not historical interpreters.
- Mauermuseum nearby: The private Checkpoint Charlie Museum (separate admission) documents Wall escapes in great detail.
- Duration: 15–30 minutes.
