The Teatro Real is Madrid's grand opera house, a magnificent 1850 building facing the Royal Palace across the Plaza de Oriente. It is one of Europe's great opera venues, hosting world-class productions and guided tours.

History

Commissioned by Queen Isabella II and inaugurated in 1850, the theatre was Madrid's primary opera venue until structural problems forced its closure in 1925. After a 71-year hiatus and a €142 million renovation, it reopened in 1997 and has since reclaimed its place among Europe's leading opera houses.
