Overview
Occupying the space of the former royal stables north of the Royal Palace, the Jardines de Sabatini are an elegant formal garden offering one of the most picture-perfect views of the palace's northern façade.
Highlights
- Geometric Design: Clipped box hedges, symmetrical paths, and a rectangular reflecting pool create an atmosphere of classical order.
- Limestone Statues: Leading Spanish monarchs carved in white limestone line the garden's central axis.
- Night Views: The gardens stay open late and the illuminated Royal Palace against the night sky is spectacular.
History
Created in the 1930s on land previously occupied by the royal stables and coach houses designed by Francesco Sabatini. The neoclassical garden design was executed by Fernando Mercadal, using the grid pattern the former stable buildings had imposed on the site.
