Overview
A hilly 100-hectare park cascading down from the Moncloa district toward the Manzanares River, designed in 1906 by landscape architect Cecilio Rodríguez. It houses one of Europe's finest public rose gardens.
Highlights
- La Rosaleda: A spectacular rose garden with over 20,000 rose bushes representing 600 varieties, hosting an annual international rose competition since 1956.
- Temple of Debod: The authentic Egyptian temple sits at the southern edge of the park.
- Teleférico Station: The cable car to Casa de Campo departs from the park's western slope.
History
Commissioned in 1906 by King Alfonso XIII and designed by Cecilio Rodríguez in a naturalistic English landscape style. During the Civil War, the park's hilltop position made it a front line—trenches and bunkers were dug through its paths. It was extensively restored in the post-war period.
Visitor Tips
- Rose Season: Visit the Rosaleda in May and June when the roses are in full bloom.
- Combine: Pair with the Temple of Debod at sunset and the Teleférico cable car for a memorable half-day.
