The Mercado de Maravillas is Europe's largest municipal market by number of stalls, a vast multi-floor marketplace where working-class Madrid buys its daily food. It is completely untouched by tourism.
A market has existed at Cuatro Caminos since the early 20th century. The current modernist building was constructed in the 1940s and extensively renovated in the 2000s. It has resisted gentrification pressures that transformed other Madrid markets into gourmet food halls.
