Overview
Madrid's vibrant LGBTQ+ neighbourhood is a colourful, design-conscious district packed with boutique shopping, trendy brunch spots, and some of the city's best cocktail bars. It hosts Spain's largest Pride celebration every June.
Highlights
- Plaza de Chueca: The neighbourhood's social hub, a small tree-lined square surrounded by terrace cafés always buzzing with conversation.
- Mercado de San Antón: A renovated three-story market building with a fresh-food ground floor, dine-in food stalls on the second, and a rooftop terrace bar.
- Boutique Shopping: Calle de Fuencarral and Calle de Hortaleza feature independent fashion designers, concept stores, and design shops.
History
In the 1990s, Chueca was a run-down, neglected neighbourhood with cheap rents. The LGBTQ+ community began moving in and opening businesses, transforming it into one of the most dynamic and desirable neighbourhoods in the city. It is named after Federico Chueca, a 19th-century zarzuela composer.
